Emily was relieved that Gentry stayed put. For one thing, it was getting dark and she could hear insects, and for another, she felt ridiculously unsure of herself. With their new, more familial understanding, his company bolstered her.
âAre you busy?â Saul asked.
âJust sitting on the beach with Gentry.â She kept her tone deliberately neutral so he wouldnât know how his lack of attention had bothered her. She was too proud to start looking needy.
There was a long, low, muffled growl before Saul asked, âYou and Gentry?â
âHe had a date with Mila.â Her chin lifted, and knowing he might question her, she fessed up first. âI went to the restaurant to see you, but you werenât there, so I decided to take a walk on the beach.â There. Take that. âBut I ran into Gentry. Mila had just left, so heâs keeping me company.â
Gentry, who could only hear her side of the conversation, silently laughed.
She lifted her brows at him, but he shook his head as if she wouldnât understand. And she didnât.
To Saul, she asked, âDid you need something?â
At that, Gentry started snickeringânot so silently.
âTell him I said to shut up.â
âI will not,â she snapped. Snapped! Good grief. She never snapped at anyone, so she quickly explained, âHeâs like a best friend, and heâll soon be my manager.â Because I thought I needed more time off for you. But no, that wasnât accurate. She was thrilled with her plan either way. She would make the decisions that were good for her, and if Saul wasnât a part of that, well, so what. Sheâd still stick to her list.
She heard Saul take a breath. âLike a best friend?â
âExactly.â Probably the best friend sheâd ever had. âA brother, even.â
Gentry smiled at her, and Saul changed tactics.
âWheeler was flirting with you.â
âWheeler?â Emily scoffedâeven though Gentry chuckled again. âThere was no flirting. He and I just chatted while I ate.â
âHoney, he told me he was flirting.â
What in the world? Why would Wheeler tell him such a thing? âWell, thatâs just silly.â
This time, Gentry and Saul both laughed. âI wonât tell him you said that. Itâll hurt his feelings.â
âGood grief, Saul. Heâs Gentryâs age.â
That did it. Gentry fell onto his back laughing until she poked him in the ribs.
Saul wasnât much better. Around his humor, he said, âI keep telling you, Em. Youâre hot. Guys notice. Iâm glad Gentryâs only a friendââ
âLike a little brother,â she insisted.
ââbut ask him if he wouldnât have been interested if you werenât his boss. In fact, he probably started out interested anyway.â
âSaul.â Appalled, she glanced at Gentry and was thankful that he hadnât heard. He was amused enough just listening to her. She gave Gentry a brief apologetic smile, and he smiled warmly back at her.
Then he sat up, and said loudly enough for Saul to hear, âSheâs now my unofficial sister. We just decided. Even if I wasnât her manager, Iâd still be around. Hope youâre okay with that.â
Emilyâs heart melted. âDid you hear that? Iâll have to disagree with one part though.
